Chapter Twenty-One
It was another busy Saturday night at The Brewery, Whispering Willowsâs one and only bar. Emerson and I sat at a hightop table while trays zoomed around us, carrying shots that people reached out and grabbed. Fairy lights were strung around the whitewashed brick walls, giving off a soft glow. We sat near the hearth, a roaring fire crackling inside, a cauldron brewing some new potion that floated into the air. Orange and cinnamon mingled together, and I wondered what potion the owner was cooking up.
âOkay.â Emerson took a drink from her skull-shaped cup. âWhat is going on with you and Preston? Itâs been like forever since we talked, and I still donât see a ring on that finger.â
I glanced down at my bare hand, frowning. A ring? I just wanted a kiss. I wasnât even thinking about a ring. Though now that she mentioned it, the thought of being Prestonâs wife sent skitters down my arms.
âYouâre getting ahead of yourself.â I took a sip of my own drink from a witchâs hat. The fruity mixture of pomegranate and blueberry exploded on my tongue. âIâm still reeling from finding out I have a father, one who actually wants to be in my life and who has this entire history with my mother I never knew about.â
Emerson made an eesh face. âYeah, um, howâs that going?â
âGood, actually. Heâs completely normal. No lies.â I thought about my past relationship with the mayor and how heâd lied to me our entire courtship, which ultimately was what caused its demise. âNo drama.â I thought about Isaac and how much trouble heâd caused when he first came into our lives. âHeâs just this nice, normal man. Itâs really refreshing.â
Emerson raised her glass. âTo nice, normal men.â
We clinked glasses.
âSo, speaking of nice, normal men . . .â Emerson moved her hands as if to prompt me to speak.
I groaned into my drink. âI donât know whatâs going on with me and Preston. Heâs planned all these wonderful, beautiful dates for me, and every single one has been ruined by something. Demons, my dad, Helen and Remy. And Prestonâs so busy teaching and coaching, and Iâm so busy running a business and raising a daughter, we canât seem to find time to see each other.â
Emerson pointed a long, manicured nail at me. âYou need to step up your game.â
I brought a hand to my chest. âMwah?â
âYes, mwah.â She shook her head, her perfect blonde waves barely moving with the motion. âNo more of these little afternoon dates. Find someone to spend the night with Remy, book a hotel, and you give Preston the best night of his life.â
My entire body lit up at that. At the thought of having Preston in a hotel room, all to myself. Absolutely no distractions. Just him and me . . . and . . . warmth pooled between my legs.
âGirl, you need an ice bucket right now.â Emerson smirked. âWhew, I want whatever youâre planning.â
âIâm not planning anything,â I said, cheeks flushing, but even as I said it, I thought about where Preston and I could go.
